Double Star Tyres Review

    double star
  • binary star: a system of two stars that revolve around each other under their mutual gravitation

  • Two stars physically very close together, as a binary star, or apparently so, as an optical double

  • In observational astronomy, a double star is a pair of stars that appear close to each other in the sky as seen from Earth when viewed through an optical telescope. This can happen either because the pair forms a binary star, i.e.

  • Double Star is a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, first serialized in Astounding Science Fiction (February, March, April 1956) and published in hardcover the same year. At the 1957 Worldcon it received the Hugo Award for Best Novel of the previous year.

  • A periodical publication with critical articles on current events, the arts, etc

  • an essay or article that gives a critical evaluation (as of a book or play)

  • A critical appraisal of a book, play, movie, exhibition, etc., published in a newspaper or magazine

  • reappraisal: a new appraisal or evaluation

  • A formal assessment or examination of something with the possibility or intention of instituting change if necessary

  • look at again; examine again; "let's review your situation"

  • A rubber covering, typically inflated or surrounding an inflated inner tube, placed around a wheel to form a flexible contact with the road

  • (tyre) Sur: a port in southern Lebanon on the Mediterranean Sea; formerly a major Phoenician seaport famous for silks

  • A tire (in American English) or tyre (in British English) is a ring-shaped covering that fits around a wheel rim to protect it and enable better vehicle performance by providing a flexible cushion that absorbs shock while keeping the wheel in close contact with the ground.

  • A strengthening band of metal fitted around the rim of a wheel

  • (tyre) tire: hoop that covers a wheel; "automobile tires are usually made of rubber and filled with compressed air"

Rigel: A Double Star

Rigel: A Double Star

A photograph of the double star Rigel in the constellation Orion. Not really that exciting but I was somewhat pleased that I could capture this with my 2.8" Astro-Tech telescope.

Frankly, I didn't even know that Rigel was a double star but as I was testing the image quality of my camera setup I noticed the faint image of another star close to Rigel. Later I confirmed that Rigel and Rigel B (the faint companion) are believed to be a true pair orbiting around a common center point in space. Rigel B is often reported as being somewhat difficult to see because of the extreme difference in brightness between the two stars (Rigel at magnitude 0 and Rigel B at magnitude 6.8, a nearly five hundred fold difference).

The position angle and separation seem about right so I'm fully confident that this is in fact an image of Rigel's companion star. By scaling this photograph against an image of the moon that I took the same night I estimated the separation at 9 arc seconds (it's supposed to be 9.4 arc seconds but at the scale of this picture one pixel is only 0.5 seconds so that seems a pretty close agreement).

Captured with an Astro-Tech AT72ED telescope (2.8"/72mm aperture, 430mm prime focal length, f/6) and Nikon D5100 DSLR (ISO 800, 1/20 second, afocal projection, 10mm eyepiece, 24mm Nikon Ai lens).

Albireo - colorful double star

Albireo - colorful double star

Albireo is a double star found at the head of the constellation Cygnus (the Swan). The stars of Cygnus form a large cross (the Northern Cross) directly overhead in the Summer sky in the Northern Hemisphere and Albireo is the star(s) at the base of the cross. When viewed with the naked eye, Albireo appears as one star, but when viewed through binoculars or a telescope, the beautiful contrasting topaz and sapphire colors of the double star become apparent. The two stars are a true (as opposed to a visual) double, meaning the stars are gravitationally bound. At a distance of 385 light years the projected separation is some 400 billion miles. Fifty of our Solar Systems would fill the gap if stacked end to end. The gold colored star, which is about 80 times larger than our sun, is actually a double star itself with a very close companion, making this grouping of stars a rare triple star system.

Albireo is one of my favorite stars in the sky and I often stop for a glance whenever I'm observing in this part of the sky. 10X30 seconds, ISO 800, moonlight night.
