William Bence & Sons Longwell Green South Gloucestershire

William Bence & Sons Longwell Green South Gloucestershire

One of Bence's early Longwell Green built buses BS30.

W.J. Bence & Sons Pioneer's of Early Motor Transport the company developed the motor side of the business and became one of the first Ford agents in this country. In those days there was no delivery from the factory and chassis had to be collected from Trafford Park, Manchester. Miss Letty Bence and Miss Mable Gough, her friend, fetched the Ford light cars and her brothers Bert and Henry collected the heavier chassis.

These chassis were actually manufactured in Detroit, U.S.A. and only assembled in Manchester. By the year 1927, 207 chassis and cars (touring and town) were sold to local customers by William Bence. The chassis were fitted with various bodies, including small ‘buses, and well known clients included Dr Perrett, H J Fry (market gardener) Spear Brothers and Clarke, Brookes Dyeworks, Railways, Godwin Warren and many others.

It was at the end of the first world war that the ‘bus business came into being and was operated from Longwell Green around the then villages of Bitton, Oldland, Warmley, Wick, Pucklechurch, Kingswood, Staple Hill, and eventually Keynsham. Business was so good that the 14 seater chassis, which were used to commence the services, were no longer sufficient to carry the passengers.

Larger sized chassis had to be acquired and, by 1922, there were 30 ‘buses operating. Also William Bence had a fleet of char-a-bancs which were for hire and made regular journeys to local beauty spots such as Cheddar, Wells, and further afield in the West Country.

Staff were taken on to run the offices and a large ‘bus depot built in Hanham incorporating a house for the manager. From here Sunday afternoon runs to the Chequers, Hanham Mills were made including teas at a cost of 1/- (bear in mind however that 1/- was about 1 hour’s pay for the average worker at that time).

Although ‘bus fares would be considered cheap by today’s standard, in the 1920s riding in a bus was quite a luxury and many workers would walk to and from work during the week and only ride home in a ‘bus on Friday evening (pay day) as a special pleasure. And it was a pleasure even if some of the men had to get out on hills like Warmley Hill and give the ‘bus a helping hand.

Regrettably there are no surviving records of the number of passengers carried in this way during the last decade of the nineteenth century, all that can be determined is that with the White Hart being used by around fourteen or fifteen other carriers, and with Old Market Street being developed during the mid 1890’s as the terminus of the Bristol Tramway & Carriage Company’s new electric car service to Kingswood, and subsequently Eastville, Old Market Street must have been a very congested road indeed.

In the late 1920s negotiations were made to operate services to Bath but these were not successful as there was opposition from the larger bus companies. In 1930 the ‘buses were sold to the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company but continued to operate as Bence Motor Service from Hanham Depot until the second world war when they were replaced by the Bristol ‘buses.

Industrial relations must have been very good in those early days and it was recorded that the drivers and staff contributed greatly to the smooth running of the green ‘buses with the gold belt on the sides despite the difficulties of temperamental engines and solid tyres.

The motor body building business continued at Longwell Green until the death of William Bence in 1935 at his home, Oldland Hall. It then passed into different ownerships and remained as a large business until January 1983 when it closed.

Bert Bence opened his own garage on premises opposite the Depot in Hanham and operated his own coaches (Berts Cars) and became a main agent for Jowett Cars. In the mid thirties he opened Willsbridge Motor Company for his daughter Mary. He unfortunately died at the early age of 57 in 1948.

Henry Bence went into partnership with William Jones of Two Mile Hill Kingswood and built special motor bodies for the trade, mainly on Ford and Bedford chassis.

During the second world war Red Cross vans were built for the R.A.M.C. and these carried plasma to the field hospitals on the battlefronts.

James Henry Brown, great grandson of the founder of the business, until recently, carried on the family tradition of motor body building and engineering at William Jones and Bence Ltd., Two Mile Hill Kingswood.

Nissan Skyline R33 GTS25t [291]

Nissan Skyline R33 GTS25t [291]

So this is my 1996 R33 Skyline, it's a single turbo rear-wheel drive import that I've owned for about 3 years now. It came a long way from Japan, to New South Wales and then to Western Australia and over the past few years I've clocked up about 60,000 kilometres behind the wheel.

I really love that I'm able to drive it out to a track day or even the drag strip and still be able to drive it home and then to work the next morning without it missing a beat. It's an amazing sports car that you can drive every day.

I've done a little bit of work to it over the years, including the fitting of a 3" front & dump pipe, front mount intercooler, manual boost controller and the removal of the factory fitted HICAS rear wheel steering system. These modifications are in addition to the parts that were already fitted to the car in Japan like the Enkei RP01 wheels (17x8.0 & 17x9.0) and the KYB Super shocks & lowered springs.

Down the quarter mile I managed a 13.6 second pass at 104.5m/h (168.2km/h) which wasn't a bad effort with the then warn rear tyres. And on the dyno it managed to put out 188 kW at the rear wheels on around 9psi of boost from the stock turbo.

This is my Skyline. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Skyline is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Skyline is useless. Without my Skyline, I am useless. I must drive my Skyline true. I must drive faster than my opponent, who is trying to beat me. I must out-race him before he out-races me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my Skyline and myself are defenders of my petrol, we are the masters of our oponoent, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no opponent, but victory. Amen.

Strobist: Multiple shots composed into a single image. Shot using two Elinchrom D-Lite 4's with 66cm softboxes, triggered by an Elinchrom Skyport system and powered by my new Tronix Explorer XT SE battery pack. We shot parts of the car in sections to get a nice smooth lighting finish that can't really be obtained with just 2 lights and then I layered and blended the images manually using Photoshop.

Big thanks to Steve for helping shoot this and set up the lights, car and camera.

24'' frame built in 1960 by Ron Cooper. I bought it as a frame only from Harry Butler in 2002. It had a mangled seat clamp which I managed to straighten. I then had to make a mandrel to recover its round shape. There is a sizeable dent in the down tube. The top tube was almost devoid of paint so had to be rubbed down, the lugs masked and then resprayed in MATT black paint. I then t-cut the matt black and polished it to match in with 'patina' of the frame. Most of the chrome has come off the forks.

DOUBLE STAR TYRES REVIEW : DOUBLE STAR

Double Star Tyres Review

double star tyres review

    double star
  • binary star: a system of two stars that revolve around each other under their mutual gravitation

  • Two stars physically very close together, as a binary star, or apparently so, as an optical double

  • In observational astronomy, a double star is a pair of stars that appear close to each other in the sky as seen from Earth when viewed through an optical telescope. This can happen either because the pair forms a binary star, i.e.

  • Double Star is a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, first serialized in Astounding Science Fiction (February, March, April 1956) and published in hardcover the same year. At the 1957 Worldcon it received the Hugo Award for Best Novel of the previous year.

    review
  • A periodical publication with critical articles on current events, the arts, etc

  • an essay or article that gives a critical evaluation (as of a book or play)

  • A critical appraisal of a book, play, movie, exhibition, etc., published in a newspaper or magazine

  • reappraisal: a new appraisal or evaluation

  • A formal assessment or examination of something with the possibility or intention of instituting change if necessary

  • look at again; examine again; "let's review your situation"

    tyres
  • A rubber covering, typically inflated or surrounding an inflated inner tube, placed around a wheel to form a flexible contact with the road

  • (tyre) Sur: a port in southern Lebanon on the Mediterranean Sea; formerly a major Phoenician seaport famous for silks

  • A tire (in American English) or tyre (in British English) is a ring-shaped covering that fits around a wheel rim to protect it and enable better vehicle performance by providing a flexible cushion that absorbs shock while keeping the wheel in close contact with the ground.

Rigel: A Double Star

Rigel: A Double Star

A photograph of the double star Rigel in the constellation Orion. Not really that exciting but I was somewhat pleased that I could capture this with my 2.8" Astro-Tech telescope.

Frankly, I didn't even know that Rigel was a double star but as I was testing the image quality of my camera setup I noticed the faint image of another star close to Rigel. Later I confirmed that Rigel and Rigel B (the faint companion) are believed to be a true pair orbiting around a common center point in space. Rigel B is often reported as being somewhat difficult to see because of the extreme difference in brightness between the two stars (Rigel at magnitude 0 and Rigel B at magnitude 6.8, a nearly five hundred fold difference).

The position angle and separation seem about right so I'm fully confident that this is in fact an image of Rigel's companion star. By scaling this photograph against an image of the moon that I took the same night I estimated the separation at 9 arc seconds (it's supposed to be 9.4 arc seconds but at the scale of this picture one pixel is only 0.5 seconds so that seems a pretty close agreement).

Captured with an Astro-Tech AT72ED telescope (2.8"/72mm aperture, 430mm prime focal length, f/6) and Nikon D5100 DSLR (ISO 800, 1/20 second, afocal projection, 10mm eyepiece, 24mm Nikon Ai lens).

Albireo - colorful double star

Albireo - colorful double star

Albireo is a double star found at the head of the constellation Cygnus (the Swan). The stars of Cygnus form a large cross (the Northern Cross) directly overhead in the Summer sky in the Northern Hemisphere and Albireo is the star(s) at the base of the cross. When viewed with the naked eye, Albireo appears as one star, but when viewed through binoculars or a telescope, the beautiful contrasting topaz and sapphire colors of the double star become apparent. The two stars are a true (as opposed to a visual) double, meaning the stars are gravitationally bound. At a distance of 385 light years the projected separation is some 400 billion miles. Fifty of our Solar Systems would fill the gap if stacked end to end. The gold colored star, which is about 80 times larger than our sun, is actually a double star itself with a very close companion, making this grouping of stars a rare triple star system.

Albireo is one of my favorite stars in the sky and I often stop for a glance whenever I'm observing in this part of the sky. 10X30 seconds, ISO 800, moonlight night.

motorcycle tire dimensions

    motorcycle tire
  • Motorcycle tyres provide the only contact with the ground, via the contact patch under normal conditions, and so have a very large influence over motorcycle handling characteristics. Motorcycle tyres have a round cross section to facilitate the leaning necessary when a motorcycle turns.

Spiritus(installation)

Spiritus(installation)

After a fire in a bar, gostly presences seize the abandoned and destroyed place, observing the curious intruders’ steps. The intent was to creat a similar trailer/teaser structure. It was filmed during an Arte As Tantas Collective photographic ride. The installation is the video’s supplement, and works as its physical support too. The ex-bar TimeOut had an unusual decoration, where bikes and cars were one of the main attractions, being the element “tire” common to both. Thus, the tires installation Spiritus represents a memory of the decoration of TimeOut, the motards and lovers of classic cars and motorcycles that were frequent customers of the bar.

Work included in Arte as Tantas Collective exhibition “TimeOut, Burned Out”

Exhibitions: Paralelo 38 (Furadouro-Ovar, Portugal)

Materials: tires, acrylic, wood (interior structure made of wood), tissue, metal rings, headphones, lcd, dvd player

Video: Experimental, fantasy, horror. Directed, produced, edited and pos-produced by Susana Andrez

Dimensions: 53,7 x 20,9 - diameter also 20,9 (136,5 x 53 cm - diameter also 53 cm)
